Village selection process

A multi-steps participatory selection process from province to village (and backward)

Village selection process started

From Province...

  • Assessment at provincial level of agricultural extension priorities and facilities: meeting organized with PAFO (all divisions), PONRE, and project (GoL and NGO) representatives

... to districts...

  • Expert-based assessment at district level of district priorities, strategy and tools related to agriculture extension and natural resources management: meeting organized with DAFO (all divisions), DONRE, and project (GoL and NGO) representatives to:
    • Understand the diversity of farming situation at the district level: expert-based agroecological (e.g. cool vs hot areas, good vs. bad soil areas etc.) and socioeconomic (e.g. easily vs. difficult access areas) zoning
    • Document the agricultural extension facilities, on-going projects and target intervention areas
  • Expert-based classification at district level of kumbans (village cluster) according to two main criteria: village accessibility, village economic development status
  • Pre-selection of target kumbans (3 to 4) based on their accessibility (selection of easily accessible villages) and the diversity of farming and economic situations
  • Expert-based classification of villages within the preselected kumbans according to their accessibility, and their economic development
  • Preselection of intervention (and control) villages according to the following criteria:
    • Practicability: Accessible all-year round, not more than 80 families to engage the whole village community, mono-ethnic, strong village committee, easy to work with for extension agents
    • Representativeness: Partner villages should be representative of the agroecological diversity and development issues found in the district
    • Partnerships: Common location with complementary projects and development initiatives

... then villages...

  • Visit of the different pre-selected villages and Technical Service Centers (TSCs) located in the target districts
  • Free Prior Inform Consent (FPIC) process implemented in the 16 selected villages

... and finally back to district

  • Final selection according to the results of the FPIC process and the recommendations from districts authorities.
